Five Senses Inventory

Do you find your energy slumping a bit by Wednesday afternoon or are you still feeling energized? Wherever you are right now, I'd like to encourage you to take some time to focus on YOU. Often times I power through my week and need a reminder to check in with how I'm really doing.

Pause. Take three deep breaths. Relax your shoulders and face muscles. Drop into your body.

How do you feel? Have you been plowing through your to-do list or wandering aimlessly? Are you feeling excited about a new project or not quite sure what's next for you? You are exactly where you need to be. I encourage you to tune in and take a FIVE SENSES inventory.

  • What do you see right now? This email and what else?

  • What can you smell? Is it pleasing? Neutral?

  • What do you taste? A beverage or snack on your desk? Your lip balm? A dry, parched mouth?

  • What noises are around you? The hum of your work space? Traffic rolling by?

  • What can feel right now? The way your clothing feels against your skin or the weight of your phone in your hands?

Last week I encouraged you to go on an adventure of seeing the world around you. What surprising things did you discover? I really enjoyed looking closer at the frost and snow.

This week we're turning our attention to our sense of smell.

This week we're turning our attention to our sense of smell.

  • What is your favorite scent? Are you able to bring more of it into your home this week? One of my favorite smells is COFFEE. I'm going to spend a few minute savoring the smell of my morning coffee before tasting it. I'm also going to pop into my local coffee roasters to read on my break while I bask in the smell of fresh roasted and brewed java.

  • Imagine if Smell-O-Vision was a real thing while watching TV or movies this week. I read an interesting article on advancements they are making to bring olfactory enhancements to virtual reality experiences. What would your favorite shows smell like? My son laughed when I asked that because he is revisiting The Walking Dead. Um, no thank you!

  • Smell plays a HUGE part on taste. Plug your nose and eat a bite or two of your next meal. Did it alter your experience?

  • Notice the scents of places you visit this week. What scents make you feel more relaxed? What scents make you want to rush out and never return?

  • What's your relationship to scent in your home? What cleaning products do you use? Do you burn candles, incense or use wax melts? Do you indulge in seasonal scents or use one favorite all the time?

This year, Whimsical Wednesdays will be delivering inspiration, activities, and curiosities to pique your creative interests. In January we are exploring our five senses. I've found that focusing on my sense of smell, taste, touch, sound, and sight really gets me grounded in my body and mind. I've created A Guide to Activate your Creativity through your Five Senses. You can download it here.

Have a super scented week! Until next time...
