Summer Camp-ish Crafting

Summertime puts me in a different creative headspace than the rest of the year. It’s less about organized, intentional creating and more about getting a bit messy and sinking into play. It’s the perfect opportunity to reclaim my childhood and let my little Starr out to run wild and free.

This summer I have already started to compile projects that remind me of Summer Camp. I only attended summer camp one time when I was twelve. It was awful. I felt completely out of place and didn’t know or particularly like the girls in my cabin. All I wanted to do was wander off and read in the woods. I couldn’t wait to get home. Even still, I have this nostalgia for Summer Camp Crafts.

What Summer Camp crafts did you enjoy making when you were a kid? How can you elevate camp crafts to suit your creative style this summer?

Tie-dye is one of my all-time favorite activities. I dyed macrame cord and am making a hanging plant holder as a gift to my niece. I painted a faux fern to go along with it… I’m thinking about adding sparkles. Too much? As a lovely wild woman I know likes to say, “Go big or go bigger!”

Other Summer Camp-ish Crafts that are dancing through my head:

  • Gathering and drying herbs and flowers to make my own smudge sticks

  • Tie-dying fabric to make a lightweight summer robe

  • Painting rocks to identify the herbs in my garden (I haven’t planted any herbs yet, but I have pots ready…)

  • Pressed wildflower suncatchers

  • DIY windchimes with found objects and bits of nature

I’m thinking about hosting a themed party so that I have a good reason to create fun centerpieces, decorations and cocktail recipes that I have pinned over the years. A party is more fun with a theme - perhaps it will distract from the 100+ degree temperatures?!

Are you feeling inspired to get crafty? I’d love to know what projects are calling to you or if you have suggestions for me to add to my Summer Camp-ish Craft list! You can email me here.

Until next time, nurture your creative spirit and have a whimsical week!
