Color Discovery
Color plays a huge part in our lives. From the clothes we wear to the way we decorate our homes to the food we eat. How much thought do you give color on any given day? When you are standing in front of a selection of kitchen utensils at the store, do you grab any ol’ spatula or do you gravitate towards the teal one? Do you reach into your closet and pull out the closest shirt to throw on or do you decide what shirt you are going to wear based on your mood or the mood you hope to embody throughout the day?
Color guides my choices so much of the time. I was surprised to discover that many people don’t give much thought to color. When faced with an aisle full of spatulas, they make a choice solely on whether or not it will flip their pancakes. Don’t get me wrong, if the colorful spatula looks like it will melt as soon as it hits a hot pan, I will go with the quality black one, but if I have a choice, you better believe I’m grabbing the colorful one! Can you relate?
I’d love for you to join me on a color discovery adventure! Observe, explore, and ponder the following:
Look around your home, your closet, your desk. What colors are most prominent? Did color play a part in your decision to purchase the item?
What color palettes do your favorite artists use? Visit a gallery or research online and pay attention to the color combinations that delight you.
Do you have a favorite color? What was your favorite color as a child? Do you know the favorite colors of your family and friends? Ask!
Which of these color themes are you most drawn to?
Something Fun to Try:
Play with color palette apps! You take a photo and the app will magically pull colors together to create a color palette. You can usually refine the colors by selecting on the specific parts of the image. I have an Android and I’ve used Adobe Capture, Coolors and Palettes, but there are so many different ones to try. You can use Coolors on your desktop. I uploaded this image of flowers that I took last summer. Like magic, it generated a color palette that I can mix up with paints or use the hex codes in my digital art.
